MINIATURE BUILDING

Pinewood Studios - Creative Media Skills

MATERIALS

Cardboard box, piping, bolts, bits and bobs, mosaic mesh, Fast Cast plates, spray paint and acrylic paint.

Henrietta and Prop Maker Lili Giacobino constructed an industrial, dystopian building. It started life as a couple of cardboard boxes, which were placed on top of each other to create height. The next things added were pieces of metal and plastic piping, bolts and any odd bits and bobs that would pass as part of an industrial building’s exterior. A repetitive panel design was created using a silicon mould and Fast Cast, which was glued to the walls. Holes were cut out to create windows, with frames made from mosaic mesh. Opaque plastic was placed behind them to give the illusion of glass. With all the windows covered, the entire structure was then spray painted grey.

Aacrylic paint was added on top of the grey base colour to create the illusion of an aged facade. White paint was lightly brushed on to bring out the highlights, brown was painted into the cracks and crevices where dirt would build up. A water spray was a great tool to create a runny, drippy look and get the paint into all the nooks and crannies. Lastly, blue paint was added to provide a bit more depth.
